PRP-Injection

What Is a PRP Injection?

PRP has taken the cosmetic world by storm since several high-profile celebrities have posted videos while getting a PRP facial or PRP injections. PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma and is a component in our blood that is sent to areas of injury to speed along the healing process. PRP injections have been used for decades by orthopedic surgeons and doctors to stimulate healing where it otherwise might be failing or very slow.

What Are Platelets and Plasma?

Plasma is simply the liquid portion of our blood. It is the medium in which all other factors are circulated through our bodies. It's made mainly of water and proteins and moves our red and white blood cells and platelets all throughout our bodies. Platelets are the blood cells that cause our blood to clot and trigger other necessary healing functions.

The growth factors that platelets secret trigger an increase in the production of collagen while also increasing blood flow to the area. The blood carries oxygen to help with healthy cell regeneration.

What Do PRP Injections Do?

Because it's been used in the medical community for decades, PRP's safety and efficacy have already been proven. In the cosmetic and aesthetic medicine world, it's just a matter of understanding how it works to know what it will work on.

For instance, because it helps with healthy cell regenerations, one can expect a brighter complexion. More collagen means increased strength in your skin and fewer lines. Growth factors can help with hair restoration. Here's a list of everything that can be addressed with PRP injections:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Minor skin laxity
  • Sun damage
  • Dull complexion
  • Thinning hair

How Triggering Collagen Helps the Skin

Collagen is an abundant protein that makes up about 80% of our skin. It's a strong and fibrous protein and makes up the layers of our skin, building a really strong foundation and anchor in the middle layer called the dermis. It forms what are called fibroblasts, and they are packed tightly together underneath the surface of young skin. Because the layer of skin under the surface is so smooth and strong, there are no irregularities that the top layer of skin falls into or any imperfections to show.

Collagen and elastin work closely together. Elastin is another protein, this one allowing our skin to be flexible and bounce back to place when we make expressions, pull or tug at our skin and even sleep on it. Elastin also keeps our skin tightly formed to our lower layer of muscles and bone structure. Collagen and elastin work together to keep all three layers of our skin held tightly together so it doesn't sag or droop.

Other Benefits of Collagen

It's not just a lack of wrinkles and sagging skin having excess collagen does for us, but it helps our skin regenerate its cells quickly and healthily. When there's plenty of oxygen and blood flow to the skin, it glows and is smooth and even. Where there is plenty of collagen, there is also plenty of hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar our bodies produce to keep all of our connective tissue, our eyes, and our skin lubricated and hydrated. Each molecule of this sugar can hold 1000 times its weight in moisture, so it attracts and holds on to hydration. This keeps our skin supple, soft, and dewy.

What Happens As We Age?

The reason we need and seek treatments is that our skin changes as we age, and it's not just the exterior. The structure of it changes, as well. The strong and solid foundation collagen made in the middle layer of our skin felt so durable because of how tightly packed those collagen fibroblasts were packed. As we age, they become sparser.

When these fibers get displaced often enough, they form crevices that the surface skin falls into creating lines and wrinkles. When our layers of skin aren't held as tightly together, there's not as much blood flow to the surface of the skin. This causes our complexions to become dull, uneven, and aged. This is about the time sun damage peeks through and our skin becomes riddled with sun and age spots.

What Can a PRP Injection Do for You?

Only a consultation can help us decide if PRP therapy is right for you, but there are wonderful results to be had for many areas of concern. What many of our clients love is that this transformative treatment is also completely natural because the entire treatment is entirely made from their own blood. There are no harsh chemicals used.

Lines, Wrinkles, and Folds

Because of the lost collagen, lines, wrinkles, and folds will only continue to deepen as time goes on. Having PRP injected into strategic areas will trigger your body to produce collagen, even in hard to reach places like underneath the eyes. The buildup of collagen fills in fine lines and wrinkles by fortifying the middle layer of skin and filling in wrinkles from the inside out.

Even on the moderate-to-severe lines, wrinkles and folds can be dramatically improved by this treatment, including:

  • Nasolabial folds that run from the nose to the mouth
  • Marionette lines from the corners of the mouth down the chin
  • Chin wrinkles
  • Fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes

Volume Loss

A surprising sign of aging, volume loss can cause our faces to look gaunt and hollow. When we lose volume in places like the cheeks and cheekbones, it not only changes the structure and appearance of our faces, but it causes crepey skin and wrinkles because the skin doesn't have the volume underneath to plump the skin the way it used to.

PRP works to build up collagen that keeps those fat pads in place while plumping up those areas with extra collagen. The result is more defined features and symmetry restored to the face. Areas that PRP injections can affect are:

  • Deflated cheeks bones
  • Deflated apples of cheeks
  • Bony temporal area

Skin Laxity

As we lose collagen, elastin depletes. This leaves our skin loose and drooping in areas. As collagen builds up, so does the flexible protein elastin, helping to pull loose skin back to the underlying tissue and structure of the face. This treatment works on the loose skin of the:

  • Neck
  • Chin
  • Under eyes
  • Jowls
  • Eyebrows

Dull Complexion

Over time, our skin's slowed ability to regenerate healthy skin cells leaves our complexion dull. There isn't as much circulation near the surface of the skin to keep it looking radiant. Hyaluronic acid is depleted, so the skin does not attract moisture like it previously could and that can make our skin look sallow.

After these injections, circulation is increased and skin cells increase their healthy turnover. This results in a bright and vibrant complexion. The treatment increases hyaluronic acid, boosting skin's natural hydration, bringing a dewy and supple appearance back to our skin.

Hair Restoration

One of the most recent developments in PRP therapy is its ability to help restore hair growth. Hair loss is often caused by the hair follicle shrinking so that the cell division and growth needed to produce the protein keratin that makes up each strand of hair can't happen. The growth factors and stem cells in each PRP injection help to expand those hair follicles.

The reversing of the miniaturization of these follicles stimulates the natural hair growth process, jumpstarting dormant hair back into an active growth stage. We'll help each client decide if this is the right treatment for their specific type of hair loss.

The Consultation

Criswell Contact Us Image

During each consultation, we go over your areas of concern and physically examine each one. It's during this meeting we go over your expected results and make sure this is the treatment to address the issues you have. If we decide this is the right treatment for you, we'll give you a few pre-treatment instructions to make sure you have the best outcome possible.

Before Your Appointment

Because we're using your blood for treatment, we want to make sure it's in the right condition for successful treatment. We also want to lessen the likelihood of any bruising at the injection site. We ask that you stop taking blood-thinning NSAIDS like ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen sodium for a week before treatment. For the same reason, one week before treatment stop taking:

  • Ginkgo Biloba
  • Garlic
  • Vitamins A & E
  • Flax oil
  • Fish oil
  • Ginseng

It's important to avoid alcohol and cigarettes for a few days before treatment and any systemic steroids. Hydrate well the day before and the day of your treatment as this makes the blood draw more easily.

During Your Appointment

We'll draw a small amount of blood and spin it in a centrifuge to separate the plasma from the rest of the blood. We'll also place a numbing cream of the injection sites. When your face is numb, we'll inject the platelet-rich plasma strategically in areas that will have the greatest effect. When you're finished, you can go back to your routine: there is no downtime.

After Your Appointment

Avoid the sun and always use sunscreen until we advise sun exposure is safe. Avoid any facial massages or manipulation of the area. For hair restoration, we may give you special cream to use in the area.

Results

PRP-treatment-2

Because the benefit of this treatment is collagen stimulation, results will appear gradually over the weeks and months following treatment. It takes six weeks to see new collagen growth and about six months after the final treatment for results to peak. Most people enjoy results for up to a year or longer, but results vary between clients.

We typically recommend a series of three treatments spread about four weeks apart. The number of treatments varies depending on the condition of the skin and the results desired.
